Messages not necessarily in Bottles
This year, the theme for National Poetry Day was ‘Messages’. The English Department marked the occasion by inviting Year 9 students to participate in a showcase of performance poetry. Students studied the work of renowned performance poets in class before collaborating on their own performance poems, applying the techniques they had learnt.
The showcase was a wonderful, atmospheric and celebratory event; students surpassed expectations in their talented writing, performance and support of performers. As part of a poetry competition, students in all years were also given the opportunity to write post-it message poems inspired by the poem ‘This is just to say’ by William Carlos Williams, as well as poems written by teachers in the English Department. The work was displayed in Reception and the best poems are displayed in the English corridor.
