Stories from the Gentlemen in Scarlet
Saar was delighted to welcome three Chelsea Pensioners on Monday 14 November and they were presented with a cheque to help support the work of the Royal Hospital Chelsea.
Retired Staff Sergeant, Derek Ralph Layton, Guardsman, David McKendrick MacIntyre and Private, John Honey told the children how well the Chelsea Hospital looks after veterans. They really enjoy visiting schools to talk about the sacrifices the servicemen make. The three pensioners visited both Infant and Junior classrooms and the children were extremely impressed with their bright red uniforms and their medals. The majority of their time was spent in Year 6.
Shaun (6B) said, “It was very interesting to learn from these gentlemen” while Zayaan (6B) added,” It was great to hear about their lives from them in person!”
Their visit added a personal perspective to the context of Year 6’s modern historical studies. They were asked some very searching questions and enjoyed meeting the pensioners very much.
