Well Done Triathletes

After a year of training, we said goodbye to our Triathletes last weekend, now that it is too hot to train outside in the summer sun. Over the past nine months, we have trained in the open water, ran 1km circuits in the sand and pedalled hard around Sheikh Nasser’s 10km loop in Zallaq. The students have developed, and significantly improved, more than I thought possible, with many having little or no running experience.  They have progressed from being exhausted after a 200m run in October to all being able to run the 1 km in less than six minutes. At this point, I would like to commend Yousif Alnajjar for choosing to challenge himself in training, by taking on 2km runs after fast 10km bike legs.

Our older students are currently sitting GCSE, IB and A-level examinations and so were not with us, but on our final day, following on from some long swim sets, the athletes competed in a mini Duathlon. A special mention must go to Kieran Jones (4:26), Patricio Gutierrez (4:38) and Yousif Alnajjar(4:55) who completed their 1km run in under 5 minutes. Following her fantastic swim, Immy Rushton came storming in with a running time of 5:09. Kenneth Goulden came in shortly after, with a 5:35, then Laura McCarthy with a 5:52, and finally Calum Lawlor with a 5:59.  Overall, a fantastic effort, after a fast and competitive 200m swim. The Tri Club is in its infancy and we would certainly welcome more of you to the team next year. A huge ‘Thanks’ to everyone who has given up their Friday mornings to help train our future Triathletes: Miss Weston, Dr Watson, Mrs Sissons, Mrs Subbiani, Mrs Price, Mrs Catallo, Aidan Shretta, Kizzy Price, Charlie Sissons, and not forgetting our parents who are always on hand to take an extra stopwatch while we bike, run or swim with the students: Mr Jones, Mr McCarthy, Mr Goulden, Mr Lawlor and Mrs Rushton. Remember ‘Anything is possible!’ Come along and take on the challenge of triathlon in September 2018.  Have a fantastic summer.

Ms McKay.
