Russia, Venezuelans and Asteroid Mining …

The Fifth BSME (British Schools in the Middle-East) Debating Tournament ran from Thursday 10 to Saturday 12 November, hosted by St Christopher’s Senior School, Isa Town. The tournament was attended by three schools from Kuwait (The British School of Kuwait, Kuwait National English School, and New English School Kuwait) and two schools from the UAE (Dubai English Speaking College and Jumeirah College). The event involved more than 130 debaters. There were 143 debates over the weekend, each of about 75 minutes duration, conducted in accordance to World Schools Debating Championships guidelines.

Dubai English Speaking College won the Senior Section and Jumeirah College were Runners up, while Jumeirah College won the Junior Section and St Christopher’s were runners up. The motion was the same for both finals: This House Believes That Russia is more responsible than the western powers for the suffering in Syria. Other motions included a variety of political and environmental topics, such as: This House Believes That the Venezuelans have only themselves to blame and This House regrets investment in asteroid mining.
